I had a heavy infantry MOS but became Company Clerk the 1st week I got to the unit.  The CO was a Capt. Mercado and when his tour was up, he was replaced by a Capt. French.  The XO was Lt. Bagisol.

I can remember Munsan, Yong Yu Gol.  Some interesting memories.

This is a heads up to anyone who is missing any part of his personnel or medical records for his tour of duty in Korea.  The Armed Services needs to know that.  As it stands now they think that missing records for Korea is an anomoly not the norm.  Use the 1-866-727-4894 number and ask for The House Armed Services Committee.  When they answer the phone ask for John Chapla with the subcommittee on Military Personnel.  You will probably have to leave John a voice mail but he needs to know that you are 1- missing your personnel file or medical file; 2- missing documentation that would approve your VA Disability Claim.  They need to know how bad the records deal is.  As a matter of fact DOA does not know where to find your Field Personnel Jacket or your Field Medical Records.  These are not at NPRC they are supposed to be with DOA somewhere.  Congress needs to make them go find them and do it immediately.

I found out two years ago that my father MSG Harry Melvin Kinney was stationed in Korea in the late 50's early 60's and was married in the Korean tradition.  They had a child as best as I can calculate between 59-61.  My father passed away in 98 never telling me or my mother about this child.  She knew of the marriage, I did not.  One day while talking to my aunt she told me.  She had never said anything to my mom or I.  She said my father wanted to bring them back.  She gave me a picture of them and a letter he had wrote her asking for diapers.  My mom passed away last month and we still had not found her.  He gave her the American name of Karen Kay Kinney.  If anyone knows anything please contact me.  I want to find her now more than ever.  Thank you for reading this post and thank you for your service to our country!

I served as radio repairman. Memorable events. Sometime during 1959 the North Koreans moved a large number of troops and artillery out in the DMZ and seemed to try to intimidate us into doing something. They stayed several hours and finally moved out. I have tried to find a news clip of this event but had no luck.
Another incident : During my time there I noted that on the Katusa's payday they always marched up on the hill to get paid. One month I followed them. I hid and watched. All of them were relieved of their money, which wasn't much and part of their rations.I made sure that this did not go unnoticed by headquarters. After a day or two their Lt. and  Sargent was gone and were not replaced. I never told any of the Katusas but somehow they found out and I was their no.1 buddy for the rest of my time there.
Incident 3. I was almost shot by one of my friends?? He was twirling a 45 and it discharged. The bullet went through a plastic window. I was at a bench near the window . Deafened me and couldn't have missed me by much.

Heads up if you are missing any part of your personnel files I have news that you may find useful.  Recently(within the past 10 days) 9,000 were found in a warehouse somewhere in the Washington DC area and my intel says that they are Korea records.  Department of Army stashed them about 40 years ago and forgot what they had where.  use the 1-888-727-4894 number and ask for the House Armed Services Committee when they answer ask for John Chapla and tell him what  you're missing.  We need to keep the pressure on so that congress will force DoA to inventory all their warehouses.

Comments:

I don't believe that I have been on here since about 2004, when I started having numerous health problems - strokes, heart attack, back and neck operations being the major ones.

Anyway, I started going through my 1/9 Cav site (http://www.9thcav.org/index.html) and ran across a message from Jim Fleming in 2004, and was wondering if he is still on here ... we were there at the same time.

Hello fellow troopers. Just checking in to make roll call.  I served on the DMZ with C Troop, 9th Cav. during 1962-63.  I recently returned from a Thailand vacation where I was reminded of the village of Yongigul back in the day.  This fun song about Thailand should remind many of past experiences in the vil.  Being a single guy, I had a good time in the vil and Thailand and plan on returning again this Spring.  Hope this note finds all feeling well.

I have known about this site for approx. two (2) years. I joined the site but then I figured out that I was not as ready as I thought I was to rehash old times. I talked to Sgt. Maclean & explained what I had done & he understood & he put my app. on the back burner until now. Thanks Sgt. Mac. I will not talk to anyone about the MUD the BLOOD & the TEARS that I have witnessed as most of you have. I would just like to have someone to talk to  that has served in the US Military. As far as I am concerned you don't have to be a combat veteran, this is just addressed to any & all US Veterans. HOOAH----iadrang----
