Are/Were you 1st Cavalry? Basic Training, Ft Hood July and August in Ft Hood Texas

If yes, when and where did you serve with the 1st. Cav. basic in 1959

Comments:

I was stationed as a Buck Sgt. at Camp Snow which is at the intersection we called Mickey Mouse Corner.
6th Battallion, 20th Artillery, Honest John Rocket and 8 inch Artillery.
Winters were bad but not muddy. Summers were bad. Some of that mud was human waste.

I came to the Unit directly from Army Security Agency, holding a Top Secret Crypto Clearance and travelling on Letter Orders.
My Company Comander and Battallion Commander were a bit suspicious of me all the time.

Back then, you could wonder about a fellow with a Top Secret Clearance but you had to be careful how you asked. You could not ask him. You had to avoid the question, "Do you have a need to know?" Curiousity was not valued in that time.

I served 13 months at Camp Snow. I contracted Hepatitis there and was down a couple of months.

Mr. Minh was employed as NCO Hootch Custodian. I could never call him a Houseboy like the other NCO's did. He was a better man than any of us.
He was about 40 years old, 6 ft 2 inches tall and 225 pounds.
He had served as a Sneaky Pete in the War.
His Family Bloodline was all Korean, having avoided mixing with the Japanese in the 45 year Occupation by the Japanese.

Mr. Minh looked more like a Chippewa.

Mr. Minh said that the Sneaky Petes, by convention, agreed to wear their hair long in the North and shave it in the South.
Both groups wore black silk Pajamas and worked mostly at night.
He said that if you felt someone place his hand on your head, at that point, if his head and yours was the same, you lived, If different, you died.
In one hand is your head and in the other hand is the knife.

I am amazed to see the progress in Infrastructure in South Korea since I have returned. There are Superhighways and Cloverleaf intersections. there were dirt roads and very little blacktop in 1964.

Most of the tall buildings in Seoul back then were built using bamboo for beams.

I admired the Koreans for perseverance.

Thanks, Jim Curlee, Sgt. E-5

"If you served with me during that time, please send me an e-mail".

That is the same as asking someone to call you on the phone and then refuse to give them your phone number!!  DUH!!

Now, I note here that no matter what, the other visitors will not see or otherwise have your email address even if you leave the PRIVATE box unchecked!  Checking the box only ensures that your message will not be published!

P.S. I have repeatedly asked the guestbook folks to remove the "Private" email option as it has no business being there in the first place!  So far they are refusing to do so even after admitting that it is a good idea!

UPDATE: While the word PRIVATE is still shown, the check box has been removed so this issue is now moot.

Hello--
I was in the calv from jan 1957 to april 1958 in Korea. I was in Hdq co 7th calv medical Co. I drove a litter jeep Before being in the Calv before they rotated to Korea I was with the 24th Inf division 34th Inf reg. Medical Co. I took heavy weapons training in Fort Carson Colorado. When arriveing in Korea at replacement co I met some medics from NY and I think they may have changed my MOS to 911 which is a medic. I think thats how I got to be assignned to a Medical Unit. I also was on the carbine team for 6 months we practiced for 3 months for the first Regimental match which was the 34th Ing regimental match which was held at the 69th field arttillery compound thats where the range was. We won that match and then went back to our units. At that time the fisrt Cal Division rotated from Japan to korea. All we did was to switch patches. Then I got to call for the 2nd carbine team which was going to be a division team.
They took all the high shooter from the regimental match and put them in the first calv division team. At that time we slept at the range and practiced for another 3 months for the next match.
We took first and second place in that match. That was one of the best times I had in the service. After we won that match they took high shooter and put them into the M1 Garrand rifle team which i was a part of but never got to shoot in a match because my drop come down and I shipped back to the U.S.If any body remembers me send me a e-mail I know its over 50 years but some one might remember me.

Served from Jan, 1959 to Feb. 1960 @ Headquarters Co. 1st. BG, 5th. Cav. in Commo.  What an experience.  Celebrated my 18th. birthday on the way over from Oakland to Inchon (with stops in Seattle, Hawaii, Yokohama, Okinawa) on the USS WM. MITCHEL.  Twenty one days in a canvas rack all the way below the ship by the propellers.  Ugh!  Every morning you would wake up with the guys A_ _ in your face from the rack above you.
Landed in Inchon at low tide and got off the ship onto landing crafts, then up the hill to the orientation hooch.  From there onto a train which took us up to 1st. Cav hdqtrs and then after further orientation on a deuce and a half.
God, what memories!  Crazy stuff for a young kid.  The cheap cigarettes, the josan's, crossing the ride paddy at night over to Big Nopay when the villages were still off limits.  Even hid out in one of the hooch-es with moma san while the MP's raided the village.  Ha ha what a hoot!
I remember stuff that no one would believe me.  The winter I was there we had no anti freeze for the commo trucks and had to drain the radiators so they wouldn't freeze up.  I think that hit the NY Times.
What an experience for a 17 year old going away from home for the first time.

John, I haven't been on here for some time now, sorry about that but I do hope things are going well with you and the web site. I have been busy on some of my "free" days trying to get an M551A1 Sheridan light tank restored in the Aviation Museum in Charlotte over the past 2 years now. No one else has offered or knew anything about them and that's where I stepped in, 10 years with them during my career in the army and willing to make an "Old Soldier" look her best to those interested in looking at her when she gets put back on display. I have not forgotten all of my CAV brothers and never will. Take care and my best to all of my brothers that served not just in the CAV, but especially on the DMZ as we did and never got the recongnition that was deserved. Vic Pitts or "Tanker 4 "

I was a medic.  Jumped with the 1st Cav. Comments:

I was in C trp 1/9th, just down the road from Squadron Hdq.
1961-62. We were all in the DMZ Police.
Being from Michigan, I remember and have commented to many deaf ears about the winter of '61-'62.  Those nites of moving into position on a 3 man "stake out" and infrantrating out undercover of darkness.  Just being able to walk was a blessing.
I've tried all my life afterwords to try to find a Paul E. Rinnie from Penn. who was in the same platoon(2nd)Pappy Greers platoon and I've been unable to find him.

Any help - anybody? I'm glad I'm back here, it's a great looking website. The 1st of the 9th boys don't want to talk to me as when I was in nam of 67-68 I was with the 71st assault aviation company of the 1st.Aviation Battliion. So much for 1st Team- always 1st Team.

Glad you have kept the site open, Their are still troops there, doing the same duty we did in 1962 and 1963. Went through the Cuban missile crisis while there closest we came to nuke war in history. In the states until lately have said little concerning those of us that served there. There were more killed in Korea than Nam during the 1959 t0 1978 time.

Again thanks for the site and would like to hear from the 1962 and 1963 guys from the 9th 8th and 7th Cav. concerning hunting accident in mine fields just south of DMZ. I'm the guy that called in the new Huey choppers to get you out
