What Unit(s)? Just surfing old outfits

Comments:
Arrived Feb, 1961 by ship.  Was assigned to Hq Co. above.  Compound was
North of Yong-Ju-Gol, and right outside gate was ville of Paju-ri.  I remember
a generator chugging at night for electricity in the ville, and the lights blinked and
the record players in the clubs sounded very strange.  Behind our compound was
a hill called Charlie Block, and on clear day you could see mountains in N. Korea.
We had the only enlisted club on post that served hard liquor.  I took a lot of
pictures there when they had the Korean floor shows.  Spent 2 R & R's in Japan
and stayed at the Ga-Jo-En hotel in Tokyo.  Had a really great houseboy named
Kang, who always smelled like Kimchi, but that wasn't as bad as the smell from
the rice paddies in the summertime.  Returned to CONUS in May 1962 by ship
for discharge in Oakland, CA.  Garryowen  !

Comments:
I arrived in Korea in June 1958 amid a rain storm.  From the shallow harbour to a pier by landing boat and then the long walk up the pier to the hut.  Spent a couple of days there, wet and sleeping on a cot with springs only (could not lay on mattress because of being soaked).  Assigned to two units while there, 5th and 12th regiments.  Went TDY playing basketball and baseball.

I had lots of unusual experience there as a kid of 19 yrs of age.  Went to Japan on R&R one trip.  I recall a village near the camp called (spelling will be off) Little No-pa and Big No-pa.  They were both off limits as they were more than 100 feet off the MSR (main supply route)  All roads were dirt.  Behind the camp was a mountain and at the top of it was an outpost.  I recall seeing choppers flying up supplies.  The mountain was called "Easy Block."

On the way to Korea we were sent to a base in Oakland and then by troop train to Seattle.  Left Seattle by ship and went up by Adak Alaska and let off 15 Marines in the fog.  Then it was a stormy trip to Yokohoma, Japan for an overnight pass.  It was a 2 week trip and I was assigned duty with a scrapper and red-lead and Navy colored paint.  I think I must have painted the entire ship.

Came back to the States by ship again docking in Seattle and then a plane trip home on a "Turbo-Jet."  Got married, got stationed with my dad at an Nike Ajax Missile Base for the remainder of my time and the rest is history.  Turned 72 this year and still playing basketball and softball. I'm a retired Police Chief of Detectives and currently employed as a Master Instructor at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

I was in the Unit Police Section at 4th Cav HQ. Near Munson-Ni.   My cousins husband Jack Hopkins was in "A" co and Jay Edge in "D" Co.  We were just south of the Freedom Bridge on the ImJin River.  I was  looking at some pictures recently of the villages, ect!  Hard to forget but these were interesting.  Some of us went to the JSA area on a tour. Lots of history there.  Some good, mostly bad. If any of you get a chance go to the Cavalry Museum at Ft. Riley, Ks.  Wonderful.  Hope to hear from HQ Co troops.  Thanks
