I sent you pictures of the UN flag at our compound in TunguRi (south of Munson). What ever happened to our UN ribbon? Our CO was Col. Wm K Schaffer. I drove him to the DMZ many times since our A Company was up there. The thing I remember most is the time we were on ALERT to go to Vietnam to bail out the French who were getting their ass kicked.

I was in the dmz police in december of 1959. we were located on the south side of paek hak san (texas or 219). the area was the former location of the town of chang dan. the only structure left was the bank vault and a stone lined pond. In the spring of 1960 we were absorbed into the 9th cav. I was in B troop and we only had the western sector of the dmz. If my memory is correct c troop had the center and a troop had the east end. There was a small farming town south of panmunjom it was called tae song dong, some called it freedom village. there were about 112 people living there at that time. They had a 2 room school and 2 teachers. they educated children to the 6th grade.
when i left the country i went to fort meade in Maryland with the 3rd cav. we trained from camp miles delaware (amphibious landing) to camp stewart in georgia. later in 1961 we went to germany due to the construction of a wall in berlin. half went to k town the others went to baumholder. we spent most of our time in the field all over the country.

Just checking in.  Great site.  Thanks John!

Served '60-'61' with 20th Field Artillery, Pobwon-ni, "Mickey Mouse Corner".  An incredibly interesting time of life.  Worked in S-4, Battalion Supply.  Made many, many runs to the 15th Quartermaster Corp in Munsan-ni picking up supplies and rations.  Lots of alerts and field duty on the "Z" at Camp Santa Barbara, the artillery live fire base that I think was a 7th Infantry Division shared camp.

Unloading ammunition from rail cars was one of my least favorite duties!  105mm and 8" rounds were heavy, and the imagination about what would be left if something ever detonated kept one's senses a bit "frazzled"

I started out as a scout with 1st Recon Squadron 9 Cav, 1st Cav Division.  The unit was redesignated 4/7 Cav, 2nd Inf Div.  I think the name of our camp was Camp Mata.  The post was north of the Imjin midway between Freedom and Libby bridges.  I spent a great deal of time on GP Ann and GP Gladys as well as many ambush patrols etc.

The duty was tough but I count blessings, it could have been much worse.

I was a mechanic for the 545th and enjoyed every minute of my tour.  Spent most of my spare time in Pajuri and Yonjugol.

We had problems with getting parts to keep our jeeps on the road so I would run all over the division trading this and that for wheel bearings, spark plugs and various other goodies.   It got to the point where I was trading stuff for other outfits too!  Great job for a 19yr old.  A case of whiskey could do wonders when I would venture over to the 7th Inf. at Camp Casey.  A senior motor seargent would give me anything in the motor pool that I asked for.

Sure would be nice to find anyone who was with the 545th back in those days.

Served as a medic with medical platoon. Hq Co.,1st BG, 8th Cav. from November of 1959 to November of 1960.  Ike came to Korea in '60.  Didn't get to see him as we could not leave DMZ.  Also, that year our Air Force brother Francis Gary Powers was brought down in his U-2.  Many hours of DMZ watching after that.  I have the highest respect for the Korean nationals.  They were folks we could emulate.  Took care of their own.  KATUSA's in our platoon were first class.  Willing to learn and all had a real sense of humor.  Favorite gag was--We asked--What you do if Joe Chink comes tonight.  Their pat answer--"No Sweat--me and Joe Chink look sameo-sameo. your gotta problem GI." Kinda like the Lone Ranger and Tonto.  All gear was strictly WWII.  The "new army" must have been somewhere else.  It was the best experience of my life and I will treasure it forever.  It was a duty all of us can be proud of.  Have not heard anything from anyone during that one year of time. I know they are out there, just got to connect.  Been to 2 reunions and nada for my outfit.

Had completed 2 years with the 82nd Airborne Div. then assigned to Korea to finish a 3 year term.... Arrived by small aircraft from Japan on my 19th birthday. I was loving it. I loved every horrible minute in Korea and every good one. For me this was the Indiana Jones experience before Indiana Jones. I learned to write, read and speak fluently and patrol ed the DMZ for 12 months. I had a couple really good buddies including 2 ROCK soldiers that patrolled with me. I ate with the villagers and loved with the ladies. My buddies and I drank in the tea clubs with the ROCK soldiers and brawled with the ROCK air force men. We all morned together when our fellow soldiers were mowed down by gun fire at the hands of North Koreans while on guard duty with empty rifles !!!!!!!!!!!!! The next day, guard duty was allowed from that time on to defend themselves with real loaded rifles...DO YOU REMEMBER ? We were at war and the enemy was the only side that remembered until that day. We are still at war and all of us who were there then and who are there now are at ready arms, observing a Tunis trues that may and can ignite. Please consider all miss spellings as typo-graphical errors. Thank You
