We were just south of the Imjin River and about 3/4 of a mile south of  Freedom Bridge. I remember it like it just happened last year. I was just 17 years old when I landed at Kimpo. I remember my first words when they opened the door of that plane, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SMELL !!!!! But like everything else over there you got use to it. The cold, the heat, the rain, the frogs and the flies.  Cuban missle crisis, C-21 going down in the DMZ, saw that our selfs, we where at our MBP positions when that happened. I'am sure we all have a lot more to say. This a great site, thanks John. Hope more find it

John---Just checking in on your new Message site. I was assigned to the 20th Arty--1st Cav. Div. near the DMZ--as an artilleryman to Battery B on a 155mm Howitizer----camp was located near the village of Pobwon-ni (mickey mouse couner). was reasigned to HQ Battery as the Bn. Mailclerk. Have fond memories of the Alerts, Rice paddies, Cold, heat, dust, and primivate living conditions of the time. The aroma of Kimchee, rice paddies, etc still linger. Powdered eggs, Milk, dehygraded potatoes, c-rats-----not gormet---but, survived. Glad to have served in the Cav. Best Unit in the U. S. Army that I served in. Glad to have served----don't know if I'd like to relive it. Great memories. Hang in there

Comments:

I just found your new book and read through it. I know I only got to spend 7 months or so with the Cav, but that is only because my company was originally with 40th Armor in the 7th Div at the old Camp Beavers north of Camp Casey. My company was moved to give extra support if needed to the 8th and 9th Cav units. If I remember correctly, the area we moved to had been occupied by a transportation unit of infantry unit. We were located just around the curve from the RC location. I remember in July maybe 29th or so when the Cav soldiers were ambushed going to their OP. We were broke down by platoons with different missions with different Cav Troops. I was 17 when I got to Korea, but I was doing what I had wanted to do all my life, soldier, and be a tanker. I went over on the USS GEN DANIEL S. SULTAN and got to fly back when my time was up there. I got to return to Korea in July 1973-74 and was 3rd Platoon Sergeant in Charlie Troop, Camp Rice later named Camp Garrey Owen. I returned again July 1976-77 and was 2nd Platoon Sergeant in Charlie Company 1/72nd Armor in Camp Casey. In all of my tours to Korea, I liked the one with the CAV best. I remember going to the USO in Seoul one time and a guy from 8th army asked me where my patch was from, I told him he wouldn't understand. I did time with 3 different divisions there and I loved every minute of it. I made some very close friends a lost a couple of them there. Write me if you want brothers. Vic Pitts 1sg (USA RET)  VCTPIT@AOL.COM

I was with Charlie Troop from 1961-62, a 16 mo. tour as I caught the JFK Extension, during, the Cuban Crisis.  My patrols and OP Duty and training as a Scout M-38A1 (Later M-151) Jeep driver, prepared me for anything that happen to me during Tet III 67-68 in Viet Nam (71st. Assault Helicopter Company, Rattlers/Firebirds).

My 1st Cav. patch has more meaning behind it as my Aviation Brigade patch that I wear on the other shoulder. What is the current awards that I'm authorized (Or Not) to wear for an old Scout like Me!!

Was in Korea from 1974-1975 with 1/38 Field Artillery, 2d Inf. Div.  I was the RATT Chief for the Battalion.  We were located at Camp Stanley, Wejonbu (blew the spelling on that one).  Memories:  First night at Camp Stanley went to the villiage outside the compound and was having a drink at a bar when two bar girls started fighting. One pulled a knife on the other and cut her.  The bouncer came in and almost killed the girl with the knife.  She was in the hospital for over six months.  Blood all over the place.  Welcome to Korea.

This was my first duty posting after Armor Training at Fort Knox.  This was some journey for an 18 year old who had not traveled much at all....I was stationed in the Munsan area between two villages, Pae Nay and 6th Tank.....do not know the history of either.

I went to Seoul one time on a weekend pass, do not remember any other trips except to see Bob Hope in early 1963.  I remember many trips in the field, in alert positions near the DMZ and mostly time at the EM club.  I made E-4 while in Korea after 13 months in Army.  Was in the 1st Cav 13 months, then the 2nd Infantry and finally the Chemical School at Ft. McClellan.
